On December 15, 1967 the Silver Bridge that crosses over the Ohio River collapsed. Investigation after the incident pointed to a manufacturing flaw, a failure of a suspension. The interesting thing is what preceded the collapse.

Beginning in November of 1966, many sightings were reported in the Area of West Virginia, and specifically a small community called Point Pleasant. The sightings were of a large creature, man like and man sized. The creature had wings and it was black with red eyes on the chest.

The 1^st report was from 5 men who were working in a cemetery that spotted a brown that flew above their heads.  3 days after that, 2 young couples were driving past an abandoned from WWII munitions plant when they saw the creature. Many other reported to have seen Mothman, and respected in their community.

A Mothman sighting was again reported on January 11, 1967 hovering over the town’s bridge, and several other times the same year. Before and after the collapse of the Silver Bridge Mothman was seen. 46 people died from the collapse.

A reporter named Mary Hyre, who was the Point Pleasant correspondent for the Athens, Ohio newspaper the Messenger, also wrote extensively about the local sightings.

The Mothman Festival is held every year and it  is a weekend long event held in Point Pleasant occurring on the 3rd weekend of September. There is a variety of events that go on during the festival such as guest speakers, vendor exhibits, and  tours focusing on the notable areas of Point Pleasant and the sight that Mothman was seen..
